A handful of destinations — Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and a few island nations — are rabies-free and intend to stay that way. (One happy exception worth knowing: a ferret travelling from the US to New Zealand needs no titer, no import permit and serves no quarantine at all — the softest route on this page.) Their entry regimes are the strictest on earth, and they share one principle worth internalising early: the work happens before departure, or it happens to your pet after arrival.
Australia and New Zealand: quarantine is a floor, not a punishment
Both require an import permit approved before travel, a rabies titer, and a stack of timed treatments — and both hold arriving cats and dogs in a government facility. The length is where owners get caught out. New Zealand is 10 days. Australia is 30 days for a pet arriving from the United States, reducible to a 10-day minimum only when the animal’s identity is officially verified before the titer blood draw and at least 180 days before export. Budget thirty and be pleased, not the reverse. That minimum applies to a perfect file. Errors do not add paperwork; they add days, or turn the trip away entirely. Spaces in the facilities are limited and book out, which makes the quarantine reservation itself one of the dated steps in the plan.
Japan: the quarantine you serve at home
Japan runs the same idea in reverse. Do everything right — two rabies vaccinations, a passing titer, and then a 180-day wait counted from the blood draw, plus advance notification to the arrival airport at least 40 days before landing — and your pet can clear import inspection within hours. Arrive without the 180 days served, and the balance is served in a facility at the airport, at your cost, with your pet in a kennel instead of your home. Same wait; very different experience of it.
The only lever is the calendar
Nothing about these regimes can be negotiated, expedited, or charmed at the counter. The single thing an owner controls is when they start. Started early, the Japan wait is invisible — life continues at home while the clock runs. Started late, the same rules become a family boarding without their dog, or a cat spending its first month abroad in a facility. Every one of these entries has a start-by date, and computing it — backwards from departure, through every waiting period — is precisely the job this product exists to do.
